To support her daughter in Ethiopia, Helina* took a job as a housekeeper. Instead, she found herself living as a prisoner. Her “employers” took her passport, and denied her pay, rest, and food.
With her daughter’s future in mind, Helina risked her life to escape captivity.
On a trip to the United States with her employers, Helina took a chance and escaped while they were asleep. She sought safety and justice with the Tahirih Justice Center. Through our legal and social services, Helina has been able to begin anew, and has been reunited with her daughter in the United States.
This Mother’s Day, join us in celebrating Helina’s resiliency and the resiliency of all mothers, like yours.
By honoring your mother with a gift to Tahirih, you will support immigrant women like Helina, who seek Tahirih’s help to reject the violence imposed upon them and transform their lives and the lives of their children.
